The best thing to do is to follow the Road Safety Authority advice on driving, especially in areas worst affected by Storm Lorenzo. If you do have to travel, here’s some advice:

  • Listen to the radio to get the latest weather updates for your area.
  • Stay away from coastal areas.
  • Park away from trees and other tall objects.
  • Expect the unexpected – fallen trees and flying debris, for example.
  • Use dipped headlights.
  • Keep an emergency kit in the car – a flashlight and spare batteries, handwarmers, blankets, jump-leads, drinking water, an emergency light.
  • Make sure your phone is charged.

In the event of breakdown:

  • Stop in as safe a place as possible. Pull onto the hard shoulder if on a motorway.
  • Put your hazard lights on.
  • Stay well away from moving traffic.

In advance of Storm Lorenzo arriving, do remember to:

  • Secure outdoor items like garden furniture, trampolines etc.
  • In case of a power cut, keep a torch handy, as well as other emergency items such as candles and a lighter. Have your mobile phone fully charged.
  • If flooding is a possibility, move what furniture you can upstairs.
